I get great ideas in the shower, and I was thinking about what makes a really good Christmas book. Primavera notes that later that same day, she took a shower. This Christmas, Saks will feature Auntie Claus-themed windows next Christmas, a live-action film adaptation starring Rosie O’Donnell will premiere. By answering some of those questions, however, a central theme emerges: it is far better to give than receive. The result is Auntie Claus, a book that reveals some of the mysteries behind the daily operations of Santa’s shop. I went home and decided I would try to do this. Something that elaborates on Santa Claus, the elves, the North Pole, and what goes on up there. Something that you could sit down with a child a couple of weeks before Christmas and the story gets them really excited about the holiday. Primavera is a huge fan of the holiday and decided, after her fruitless search, maybe she should write a Christmas book, something that takes the magical, fun aspect of the holiday and presents it in a way that’s not cliche. A lot of Christmas books almost try not to be terribly, terribly Christmasy. I wanted something that dealt with the Santa Claus/North Pole aspect that makes the actual theme of the holiday more real. They say that necessity is the mother of invention, and four years ago, author Elise Primavera was in need of a Christmas book for a very young friend.

In his introduction, Thomas Banchoff points out that there is no better way to begin exploring the problem of understanding higher-dimensional slicing phenomena than reading this classic novel of the Victorian era. We can now manipulate objects in four dimensions and observe their three-dimensional slices tumbling on the computer screen. This field, which literally makes higher dimensions seeable, has aroused a new interest in visualization. A first-rate fictional guide to the concept of multiple dimensions of space, the book will also appeal to those who are interested in computer graphics. By imagining the contact of beings from different dimensions, the author fully exploited the power of the analogy between the limitations of humans and those of his two-dimensional characters. Since then Flatland has fascinated generations of readers, becoming a perennial science-fiction favorite. In 1884, Edwin Abbott Abbott wrote a mathematical adventure set in a two-dimensional plane world, populated by a hierarchical society of regular geometrical figures-who think and speak and have all too human emotions. In each (unlabeled) subsection of the anthology, he would be careful to juxtapose stories with similar themes that had wildly different graphic approaches. The experience started with the ways children looked at the world and went from teens to adults, then switched from the ways we communicate to the ways in which we try to obtain our desires. He cleverly and painstakingly edited it such that each story in some way connected to or commented on the stories around it. For Chris Ware in 2007, he was interested in stories that showed its characters expressing the truth of their desires. For Harvey Pekar in 2006, many of his choices leaned towards naturalistic stories and representations. After work that day, she couldn't get the story out of her head. "And you know where, through maybe any twist of fate, I could've potentially grown up," Tahir says. The story had been filed in Kashmir, near Pakistan, where her family is originally from. "It's not always clear what the charges are and a lot of these women never find out what's happened to their family member," Tahir says. She was assigned to edit a haunting news story by Emily Wax about women in India whose husbands, sons and brothers had been disappeared by state police. Tahir says she got the germ of the idea for the story in 2007, when she was working as an editor at The Washington Post. Tahir's young adult fantasy series "An Ember in the Ashes" follows a teenage girl fighting against the military empire that threatens her family. And according to author Sabaa Tahir - whose new book, A Torch Against the Night, continues that trend - if you look at today's headlines, the genre's popularity makes sense: After all, the news is where she found her inspiration. There's an insatiable appetite, it seems, for books about young people killing each other in made-up militarized societies. Your purchase helps support NPR programming.
